A New Twist on a Japanese Classic

Flying Dragon. Godzilla. Lion King. These are not names of mythical beasts, but rather some of the innovative sushi items you can order at the newly opened Shiki Japanese Restaurant in San Mateo.

A roll filled with tempura prawns and crab is topped with seared white tuna and a special house-made sauce — that’s the Flying Dragon. The combination of the crunchy prawn, the smooth crab and the melt-in-your-mouth white tuna is utterly delightful. For some heat, the Godzilla takes the standard spicy tuna roll, dips it in the deep fryer and covers it with more spicy sauce. The broiled salmon that sits atop the Lion King is a testament to how well Shiki’s sushi chefs know their fish.

The rice-free Red & White wraps tuna and asparagus with cucumber for a lighter take on sushi, while the Five Star Delight combines the decadent treasures of the ocean, like sea urchin, squid and flying fish roe.

Quickly becoming a local favorite, Shiki’s not only serves its signature rolls but also Japanese entrees such as tempura, teriyaki and udon.

A definite winner.
